Meet the Oakland Raiders

It’s one of those teams that you either love or hate. The Oakland Raiders, known for their struggles during tough seasons in the NFL, is also famous for its groundbreaking plays in the football history. This American professional football team is based in Oakland, California. It is currently playing in the Western Division of the American Football Conference of the National Football League.

It started out with the American Football League, and later joined the NFL during the AFL-NFL merger that took place in 1970. The Raiders was established in 1960. It took a spot in the AFL, which was newly founded at that time. The team moved to Los Angeles and stayed there for 12 years from 1982 to 1994. A year after that, it went back to its original home in Oakland.

During the initial seasons, the Raiders had seen various highs and lows in the football field. Starting in 1963, head coach Al Davis won numerous games, losing only seven seasons from that year up to 2002. During its stay in the AFL, the team won one league championship and that was in 1967. It also bagged three division titles in the years 1967, 1968, and 1969. It also appeared in the second season of Super Bowl after joining the NFL in 1970. Since then the team has won 12 division titles, three super bowls, and one conference title. Thirteen of is former players have been included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Raiders has had a lot of great players in its roster. One of these is Jim Plunkett. At first, he wasn’t drafted by the Raiders. He also didn’t do well as a starter for the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers. But when he came back to Oakland in the late 1970s, he led the team to two Super Bowl championships.

Another memorable player was Rich Gannon, who played for the team only for six seasons. But during his time with the team, he was able to throw a total of 17,858, a record in the team history. That’s an average of more than 2,900 yards per season. Apart from that, he also averaged about twenty touchdowns per season. He was named as the NFL MVP in 2002.

Daryle Lamonica was also a big name for the Oakland Raiders. This famous quarterback had a record of 62-16-6 and twice led the AFL when it came to touchdown passes. He was recognized as the UPI Player of the Year not only once but twice in 1967 and 1969.

The list of top Oakland Raiders will not be complete without mentioning the name of Ken Stabler, who has thrown most yards and touchdowns in all of the Oakland Raiders in the history of the team. He earned the nickname The Snake for his excellent ability of snaking through opponents without getting toppled down.
