Let’s Honor the National Freedom Day

National Freedom Day is an American holiday observed every February 1. It honors the signing of a joint House and Senate resolution by then President Abraham Lincoln. This resolution later became the 13th Amendment of the United States Constitution. It was signed by the president to put a stop to slavery.

Slavery was outlawed on February 1, 1865 but it was only ratified by the states a few years later. Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., who was himself a former slave, strongly believed that there should be a day celebrated to commemorate the freedom for all Americans. While he was still residing in Philadelphia some years before his death, he invited both local and national leaders to petition for a national holiday that would commemorate the signing of the 13th Amendment. As a rest, the National Freedom Day was established.

Since the 13th Amendment was signed on the first day of February, the National Freedom Association decided to choose this day to celebrate the National Freedom Day. The first observance of this holiday was held in February 1, 1942 at the Independence Hall. As part of the celebration, a wreath was laid at the Liberty Bell. This soon became a yearly tradition. Then President Harry Truman signed a bill that proclaimed February 1 as National Freedom Day. The bill was signed on June 30, 1948.

Since it is a not a federal holiday, government offices and banks are open for business as usual. Show your love for freedom and your country by downloading a free National Freedom Day wallpaper for your computer.
