Giving Importance to Military Heroes
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that takes place every last Monday of May. This holiday, which used to be known as Decoration Day, commemorates and gives honor to all U.S. soldier who died in military service. This was first enacted by the Africans to honor the Union Soldiers of the American Civil War. To be more specific, it was first observed in Charleston, South Carolina in 1865. The government extended it after World War I so that all soldiers who have died in war, regardless of what war it is would be given rightful prestige for their heroic service for the country.
There are many ways we can express our gratitude to all these heroes who have offered their lives to protect our country and our people throughout the course of history. Below, you will find some of the best ways on we can give importance not only for this holiday, but for the people that we honor during this time.
Visit graves of soldiers
If you have a family or relative who died in war or during military service, be sure to visit his grave on this special day. Say a prayer for his soul and get together with the family to talk about and remember all his heroic deeds not only for the country, but also everything that he has done for your family. Spend the day browsing through his photos and looking at his memorabilia. This would allow you to give importance to your deceased relative, who can be considered a hero in his own right.
Meet and talk with veterans
Military veterans spend this day together to reminisce the events that transpired during wartimes. Even if you know your history by heart, it is still different to hear it from a person who was actually there to witness everything that history books talk about. Be sure to express your gratitude to these veterans. Even if they survive the war doesnt mean they are not heroes. They were a major part in defending the country from enemies and deserve to receive gratitude from people of the present generation. Remember, you wont be enjoying everything you have today, if these people were not able to defend our country rightfully.
Teach children about the lives of military heroes
Be sure to involve children on this holiday. As young as they are, they should start to learn about the major importance of Memorial Day to the history of the country. Discuss with them the heroic deeds of these people, how they risked their lives to protect our nation. Acquaint them with various military heroes and explain their contributions.
Go to military museums
It would also be a good idea to have the family visit military museums to learn more about history of army. Fort Lewis Military Museum, U.S. Army Military Museum, National Infantry Museum, The Old Guard Museum, and West Point Museum are just few of those that are spread all over the country. Its a good chance that there is one near your vicinity that you can visit.
Dont forget to decorate your home with military memorabilia as well. As simple as a free Memorial Day wallpaper on your computer would suffice if you dont have time to do extensive decoration.
