Labor Day Celebration
The first Monday of September in the United States is set for a federal holiday known as Labor Day. This year, it would be on September 3. This day is meant to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers. Matthew Maguire was the one who first proposed the holiday in 1882 while he was serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union (CLU) in New York. Others say that it was Peter J. McGuire who proposed the holiday after he witnessed the annual labor festival in Toronto Canada. It was Oregon that first made this day a holiday in 1887. Thirty states were already observing this day before it became an official holiday in 1894.
Celebrating the holiday was first outlined to have a street parade in order to exhibit to the public the strength and spirit of the different trade and labor organizations followed by a festival composed of workers and their families. Later on, speeches from prominent men and women were added to give a civil significance to the celebration. In 1909, Labor Sunday was adopted to give importance to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
This celebration is far from the May 1 Labor Day celebration in other countries which is full of political matters and rallies. The American Labor Day celebration is depicted by family and workmate picnics, barbecues, sports activities, fireworks, and public art events. It is a great time to enjoy family bonding, away from work just before school begins again for children.
