F1 Spanish Grand Prix Barcelona
The Gran Premio de España, also known as the Spanish Grand Prix is one of the Formula One races which are currently held at the Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain. Before the first F1 Spanish Grand Prix race, motor racing events had already transpired in the country. The most notable of these is the Catalan Cup of 1908 and 1909 on the roads of Sitges.
Right after the first race, the track of the Spanish Grand Prix fell into financial issues and the organizers were pushed to search for another venue. The race was moved to Circuito Lasarte in 1926. The following year, the race became part of the AIACR World Manufacturers Championship but the Spanish Grand Prix was still un-established.
The Spanish Grand Prix scheduled in 1930 was cancelled because of the grim economic situation after the crash of the Wall Street. The next two races for the following years (1931 and 1932) were also cancelled due to economic and political difficulties. In 1933, the race was revived at Lasarte and it had gained the Spanish governments support.
This year, Barcelona opened its doors to become an alternate Spanish venue for the F1 race. The citys existing contract for the Grand Prix every year will run through 2016.
