What to do on Eid ul-Fitr
Eid ul-Fitr is the end of Ramadan and the start of Islamic month of Shawwal. It marks the end of a month spent on fasting and prayer. The most common traditions associated with this celebration include attending communal prayers, listening to the sermons, and giving zakat al-fitr or food intended for charity.
The sermons are also called khutba. They are held outside on large venues so that the Muslims could join in a communal prayer and listen together. Muslim families even travel far just to join the communal activity. Some venues used include sports arenas. Most communities organize communal meals and events for children to celebrate the festivity. Muslims who were not able to give zakat al-fitr during the Ramadan can do so on this day and even those who already made charitable acts repeat it during Eid ul-Fitr. This charitable act of giving food may come in the form of barley, wheat flour, and raisins. Some offer to give monetary equivalents instead of food.
Some other Muslim traditions are also observed during this day such as wearing new clothes and visiting families and friends for a sumptuous meal that mainly features sweet vermicelli. They bring presents or sweets to their families and give candies to the children. Most people send greeting cards in paper or even through the internet with the words Eid Mubbarak or blessed Eid. The day is considered a nationwide public holiday in Muslim countries as well as in Australia, Canada, UK, and the USA.
