Eid al-Adha of our Muslim Brothers

One of the most famous Islamic Festival is Eid al-Adha. During this festival, Ibrahim’s sacrifice of his own son, Ishmael in order to show his willingness to follow Allah is commemorated. Muslims all over the world celebrate this religious festival. Almost all Muslim stores and service offices are closed or have minimum operation during this day

The primary traditions in celebrating Eid al-Adha is to pray and listen to the sermon at the mosque. Muslims wear new clothes; sacrifice an animal through an act called qurbani, and visit friends and families. Qurbani signifies how Ibrahim sacrificed an animal to Allah in place of his son.

The most commonly used animal is sheep or goat that they refer to as udhiya. This tradition is done in Muslim countries but is skipped in some countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States, and in the United Kingdom. A communal meal composed primarily of meat is served. People also give money for their less fortunate brothers and sisters so that every member of the community can enjoy a meal with meat.

The primary customs during this festival is to share meals, hand out gifts, devote time in prayers, wish each other well, and have social gatherings. Aside from spending the day listening to the sermon in a mosque, some people also travel to Mecca and the surrounding areas in Saudi Arabia. This tradition is called Hajj pilgrimage. The event stands for one of the five pillars of Islam and many Muslims plan and saves for this journey.
