Celebrate Earth Day
What’s the story behind Earth Day? Earth Day was the brainchild of an American politician who wanted to put the issue of the environment on the international and national political agenda. He planned for a nationwide teach-in to show politicians that people cared about the environment and wanted to do what they could for it.
That politician was US Senator and former Wisconsin governor Gaylord Nelson. In 1969, he said that he wanted to conduct an environmental teach-in during the following spring.
It was not until April 22, 1970, that 20 million people in the United States would take part in the inaugural Earth Day. They advocated for a healthy, sustainable environment by occupying auditoriums, streets and parks. There were already many groups fighting against a variety of environmental issues like oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife. Earth Day brought them all together and united them in a common cause.
Twp decades after that first teach-in, 140 countries were holding their own Earth Day, with various activities. In the year 2000, hundreds of millions of people from 184 countries took part in Earth Day events. Even the United Nations recognized the significance of Earth Day. It voted to mark April 22 as International Mother Earth Day. Now organizers say that Earth Day participants have reached a billion.
