The Roots of Durga Puja Festival

Durga Puja is one of the most important Indian festivals because it also signifies a celebration of life, culture, customs, and traditions. The festival is held for six days known as Mahalaya, Shasthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, and Vijayadashami. For the Hindus in West Bengal and Tripura, this is the biggest festival of the year. The festival is also celebrated on September or October of every year in Eastern India, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujatar, Punjab, Kashmir, Karnataka, and Kerala.

The festival is celebrated to worship Shakti or Goddess Durga. The goddess was created by the gods to defeat a Buffalo Daemon that killed people and threatened to uproot the gods. Goddess Durga is depicted as a beautiful maiden with ten hands riding a lion, each hand holding a weapon from the gods. The festival also commemorates how Rama invoked the goddess Durga before his battle with Ravana during the Bengali month of Aswin. This festival is the most celebrated and significant socio-cultural event in the Bengali society.

The celebration is organized by Indian communities. In India pandals are constructed. In other communities in America, Europe, Australia, idols are flown in from Kumartuli in Bengal. The dedication of the Hindus to their tradition led for a boost in tourism that was why in 2006, the immersion of the Durga idol was allowed from the Thames River during the festival. In the United States, cultural programs are held with food and Indian market that sells ethnic clothing, music, DVDs, jewellery, and books. In Australia, the main events include Bhog Distribution, dhunuchi naach, anjali, and cultural programs.
