In Remembrance of Confederate Soldiers

Confederate Memorial Day is a day when we remember and give tribute to all the Confederate soldiers who fought and died during the American Civil War in the 1860s. It is a state holiday in some states in the US including such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. It is celebrated in Alabama, Georgia and Florida on the fourth Monday in April. In North and South Carolina, it is held every May 10. If it falls on a Sunday in North Carolina, the celebration is moved to the following Monday. In Mississippi, it takes place on the last Monday in April.

During this day, a line of events are set and organized. At the Main Library of the University of Georgia for example, the original Constitution of the Confederate States of America is displayed for public viewing. Other customs include:

• Placing of flags on the graves and memorials of Confederate soldiers

• Holding of church services

• Re-enacting the battles and events that transpired during the Civil War

• Displaying relics from the Civil War

In the states mentioned above, schools and state offices are closed. But since it’s not a federal holiday, federal offices are still open. As for stores and businesses, it depends on the owner. Public transit operates as usual.
