Commemorate Columbus’ Arrival in the US on Columbus Day

Columbus Day has been a national holiday since 1937. It commemorates the arrival of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Backed by Spanish royalties, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Columbus sailed in August of that year to explore the western sea route in China and India. He also planned to find out about the spice islands of Asia. However, he landed in the Bahamas instead. He then became the first European to set out into a journey in the New World.

After landing in Bahamas, Columbus went on to sail further. He sighted Cuba and thought that it was China. Another month after that, he went to Hispaniola, which was mistaken as Japan. It was here that he established the first colony of Spain with the help of 39 men. He returned to Spain a year after to announce his triumph. He brought spices, gold, and Indian captives. By the time, he set out for his third journey was only the time he realized that it wasn’t Asia that he discovered but another continent that the Europeans didn’t know existed. Before his death in 1506, he was able to explore more of the Atlantic.

Today, Columbus Day is celebrated in the US and in other parts of the world. Traditions include church services, parades, concerts, picnics, and other family-friendly events. However, it’s not a public holiday in some parts of the US like Nevada, California and Hawaii.
