Honouring Columbus Day
Columbus Day is a yearly commemoration of Christopher Columbuss arrival on the American continent in1492. In Spanish, this day is Dia de Cristobal Colon. The celebration happens every second Monday of October, the very same day Columbus arrived at the continent and this year that would be on October 8, 2012.
Most celebrations held during the day are centred in the Italian-American communities. The celebration includes church activities, parades with a band, and other big events. The biggest celebrations are often held in New York and San Francisco. Although it is widely celebrated in the continent, Columbus Day is not being observed as a public holiday in California, Nevada, and Hawaii. In Hawaii, it is celebrated as Landing Day or the Discoverers Day. In South Dakota they celebrate Native Americans Day while it is the Indigenous Peoples Day in California.
The celebration of Columbus arrival in America held controversial issues since his arrival led to other people to get to the land and drive the indigenous people of America away and out of their own land. Aside from this, people also claimed that it was not Columbus who first discovered the land although he is portrayed as the discoverer of the New World because the place is already inhabited when he discovered it.
The celebration originated from the Italian-American heritage and started in San Francisco by the year 1869. It became an official holiday in the United States during 1937 while the celebration held every second Monday of October started only in 1971.
