A Whole Lot of Lee … fun facts and news about Cliff Lee – read on …

A Whole Lot of Lee … Can’t get enough of Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee? We don’t blame you. Lee’s a left-handed ace pitcher who’s known for his signature pitches: a four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, a cut fastball and a circle changeup and a knuckle curve.

He’s so good at what he does that the won the American League Cy Young Award in 2008. Cliff Lee started his professional baseball career with the Cleveland Indians. He tossed his first pitch in a game against the Minnesota Twins on September 15, 2002. He was the starting pitcher during his major league debut. During that game, Lee only gave up a single run in 5.1 innings, however his team lost. Lee would pitch only once more that season in a game against the Kansas City Royals. He gave up only one run in five innings, but the Twins also lost that game.

Lee continued to pitch for the Indians until the year 2009. In 2007, he suffered a groin strain during spring training. This caused him to start the regular season on the disabled list. He struggled during this season, hitting Texas Rangers right fielder Sammy Sosa in the head with a pitch. This led to a fight between Lee and Indians catcher Victor Martinez.

By the time 2009 rolled around, Cliff Lee was at the top of his game. Now pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies, he was named the Game 1 starter for 2009 World Series. He had previously had a 2-0 record during the first two rounds of the playoffs.

The Phillies went on to win both games that Lee pitched. During Game 1 of the 2009 World Series, Lee dazzled the fans by pitching a complete game 10 or more strikeouts and no walks. He also shut out the New York Yankees when it came to earned runs. During Lee’s next start in Game 5, he allowed five runs and three walks. He also struck out three batters in seven innings.

Even though the Phillies won both of the games that Lee pitched, the New York Yankees would go on to win the 2009 World Series.

Lee returned to the 2010 World Series – this time as a pitcher for the Texas Rangers.
