The Significance of Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, or the “Fifth of May” is a celebration held every May 5 as a feast which recognizes Mexican heritage and pride. It is also celebrated to commemorate the democracy and freedom during the first years of the American Civil War.

In Puebla, Cinco de Mayo is observed to remember the victory of the Mexican Army led by General Ignacio Zaragosa Seguin over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla which transpired on May 5, 1862. To set things straight, the occasion is definitely not Mexico’s Independence Day.

The roots of the celebration can be traced from the French occupation of Mexico during the aftermath of the Mexican-American War in 1846-1848, Mexican Civil War of 1858 and Reform Was in 1860. These battles left the Treasury nearly bankrupt and in ruins. President Benito Juarez issued a moratorium on all foreign debt payments to be suspended for two years on July 17, 1861 but Spain, Britain and France demanded reimbursements. The first two countries negotiated but withdrew, while France decided to nab the chance to establish a Latin empire that favors French interests.

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is a holiday limited to the state of Puebla. Outside the country, there are also celebrations as long as there are Mexican populations. Canada, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Australia, Engalnd, New Zealand, Thailand, France and Taipei are just a few countries that have their own versions of celebrating Cinco de Mayo.
