St. Nicholas of the Christmas Holidays
Santa Claus is also known as St. Nicholas, Santa, or Father Christmas in different corners of the Earth. He is that white-bearded old man who wears a red costume and who brings gifts to children all over the world during Christmas Eve or the night of December 24. He is portly and joyous with a grandfather-like aura. He wears round spectacles along with his red hood and red trousers. He is a mixture of legendary, mythical, folkloric, and historical character that makes Christmas an anticipated event for the many, especially the children.
Based on Christmas traditions and lore, Santa lives in the North Pole where he has a big factory of toys and other things for children. He lives with a great number of elves who work in the factory to produce gifts for the children. It is a popular belief that Santa Claus makes a list of the children all over the world and classifies them according to their behavior. He also knows what each child’s Christmas gift wish is and asks the elves to make it. Children who had been nice all year would receive their gifts.
Santa Claus crosses the world riding in his sleigh that is carried by a group of flying reindeer. He would go down the chimney in the middle of the night and put on his Christmas gift by the hanging socks or under the Christmas tree. It is also believed that he does not come to deliver his gifts unless the children are sound and fast asleep.
