Christmas Gifts Holiday Expression
There have been two origins to why people exchange gifts or presents during the Christmas season. The first reason is because these gifts represent the first three gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus to honor him. These first three gifts on the first Christmas are gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The second and more religious origin of gift giving is that during Christmas day, God gave his only child to mankind to save them from their sins. Therefore, the first Christmas gift is Jesus Christ and God gave Him to man.
The frankincense is a Jewish perfume used for worship rituals and signifies that the wise men worship Jesus. Gold symbolizes Kings and the wise men believe that Jesus is the King of Kings. Myrrh is another kind of perfume used on dead bodies and is a symbol that Jesus would suffer and die to save mankind. As God himself was that generous to give His only son to men who defied him and committed sins, the tradition of Christmas gift giving became a very important part of Christmas.
Another religious source of Christmas gifts is the peoples belief in Santa Claus. Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas brings gifts to children all over the world during the Christmas season. The gifts are placed in different spots, commonly on shoes, boots, and socks. Up until today, parents and the elderly relieve the kind heart and deeds of St. Nicholas by raising their children to believe in Santa Claus and learn his value of gift giving especially to the people in need.
