Traditions of the Chinese New Year

The Chinese people had been known all over the world for their rich culture and tradition. One of the richest and most important traditional holidays in China is the Chinese New Year. The Chinese also call it the “Spring Festival”. This is also called as the Lunar New Year since the Chinese calendar is Lunisolar. This holiday is held on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar up to the 15th day of the first month or during the Lantern Festival.

It is the longest and most important celebration for the Chinese and it centers on family life and blessings. There are different customs and traditions tied to this celebration. One important tradition is the Spring cleaning. This is done before the celebration of the New Year since cleaning on the first day of the year could mean sweeping away the good fortune. The whole house is thoroughly cleaned and old and damaged materials are thrown out of the house. Breaking dishes and using sharp objects are seen as unlucky and must be avoided at any cost.

The New Year celebration calls for a family reunion dinner which means all members of the family should be home. The table is laden with food that has their own symbolical meaning. Round and fatty fish are served for richness while glutinous rice round cakes are served for better life. The round shape symbolizes eternity while the sticky characteristic brings closer family ties while attracting good luck. The fish is meant to have a remaining part which is stored overnight to convey a message of ‘having profit every year.’ The color red, especially the red envelope is also symbolic as it represents good luck and is used to ward off evil spirits.
