Carling Cup is actually the English Football League Cup. It is currently known as such because it is sponsored by Carling. This league cup was actually founded in 1960. But it was only in 1982 when commercial companies have begun sponsoring the event. Because of this, the league has had different names throughout the years. Here is a list of its different names starting from 1982: Milk Cup – 1982 to 1986; Littlewoods Challenge Cup – 1986 to 1990; Rumbelows Cup – 1990 to 1992; Coca-Cola Cup – 1992 to 1998; and Worthington Cup – 1998 to 2002. Carling started sponsorship of the league cup in 2003. Ninety-two football clubs from Wales and England play in this league in a knockout format or single elimination basis every year.
The 20 clubs are Premier League clubs while the 72 are clubs of the Football League. The latter are the ones who organize the competition. Current title holders are the Manchester United. It beat Aston Villa 2 to 1. This team has won four Carling Cup titles so far. But the team that holds the record of being the most successful club in the leagues history is FC Liverpool.
