In Observance of Black History Month

Black History Month is a commemoration of the history of the African Diaspora. It was first observed in 1976. From then on, it has been observed yearly in the United States and Canada every February. In the United Kingdom, it’s on October. It is also called the African-American History Month in the US. When it first started, it was called the Negro History Week. Carter G. Woodson, a historian, began this event in 1926 for it was his aim to educate the American people about the history of African Americans with focus on their culture, background and achievements over the years.

He wanted African Americans to be considered as a more important part of the country’s history. Another historian John Hope Franklin said that Woodson desired to promote awareness of the Negro History Week among the general public. Despite several criticisms, the Black History Month materialized. During this month, African American history is taught among thousands of students.

There is a continuous debate over this, however. Critics say that there is no usefulness for a month dedicated to a history of only race. Some supporters of the race don’t appreciate that this event is celebrated during the shortest month of the year. For some, it has become an “excuse” to take for granted the African American history during the rest of the year, therefore further promoting racism. They say that the contributions and achievements of the African Americans should be appreciated and recognized every month of the year and not only during February.
