Advent Traditions

All around the world, the birth of Christ is celebrated in many different, joyous ways. One happy way to do this is to celebrate Advent. Advent begins a month before Christmas. A good way to celebrate advent is by using an Advent calendar.

An Advent calendar will depict the birth of Christ. Each Advent calendar contains a small window made out of paper. These windows are numbered from 1 to 24, for each day of December before Christmas. As each day passes, one member of the family will open the window to show a scene from the story of the birth of Christ.

Aside from paper Advent calendars, some families also use Advent calendars made of cloth. Instead of windows showing depictions of the life of Christ, Advent calendars have twenty-four pockets. Each contains a distinct ornament. Like the scene in the windows of advent calendars, the ornaments are also signify aspects of Jesus’s life.

Yet another interesting Advent tradition is the Advent wreath. The wreath forms a circle because it signifies that Christ’s nature is divine and eternal. The undying evergreen also symbolizes eternal life. Around the wreath, four candles are positioned. These candles are lit every week. The candles represent everyone who eagerly anticipated the birth of Christ, such as the shepherds, the angels, the wise men, and the prophets. On Christmas Eve, the single red candle at the center of the Advent wreath is lit.
