Bhai Dooj Festivity

The Bhai Dooj Festival is celebrated in India two days after the Diwali. This year, it would be held on November 15, 2012. The festival is held to celebrate the love between a brother and a sister just like Raksha Bandhan. The festival is also called Bhav-Bij in Marathi and Bhai-Tika in Nepal.

During this day, the sisters pray for the well-being and prosperity of their brothers. There are also traditions and rituals observed during the feast. One of the rituals entails a sister to put tika or tilak on her brother’s forehead. Tika or tilak is more common known as the vermilion spot. The sister also offers sweets and performs other rituals to ward off evil spirits away from their brother. On the other side, the brother offers gifts to the sister as an expression of their love.

The rituals vary from different regions. In Bengal, the sisters are required to fast in the morning before putting tika on the brother’s forehead. They also give rice and new grass as gifts to their brothers. In Uttar Pradesh, the gifts for a brother are an aab or length of flax, knotted into a circular shape then dotted with sugar batashas. Although the main theme of the ritual is to show the love between a brother and sister, the sister in Bihar first curses her brother before asking forgiveness to portray past mistakes. Due to modern times, sisters who are not able to be physically together with their brothers send their tika through envelope and even through the internet wherein they send virtual tika.
