Holy Christmas Night
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining. This is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. These lyrics from a popular Christmas carol sum up what Christmas is all about. This night is special to many Christians all over the world because it is the night when Jesus Christ was born.
Many people celebrate Christmas Eve by going to Midnight Mass. It is a time to spend with family, to walk or drive to the nearest church. Sometimes, there is a re-enactment of the very first Christmas, when Mary and Joseph were seeking shelter and Jesus was born in a manager. It is said that churches are filled the most during Christmas and Easter. For many people, Christmas is a joyous occasion, as well as a solemn one. They celebrate Jesus’s birth, thank Him for his life, and commemorate this event.
During the service, Jesus’s birth is timed to happen exactly during midnight so that the members of the congregation will feel the special significance of this occasion.
After the mass, people then head home and partake of a midnight snack. This can consist of bread, ham, cheese, hot chocolate and cookies. Whatever type of food is served, this is a cherished family tradition that is repeated every year. Everyone looks forward to it.
