Traditions for Bastille Day
Bastille Day, also known as the French National Day, is celebrated every 14th of July. In France, it is officially called La Fête Nationale, which means The National Celebration in English. This day is a commemoration of the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, the anniversary of storming of the Bastille prison and fortress. This event symbolizes the uprising of the modern French nation. There are various festivities and ceremonies held in different parts of France every July 14. One of the most popular and also the oldest is the military parade on the Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris that have French officials and foreign officials as guests of honor.
This parade opens with the cadets from the École Polytechnique and Saint-Cyr, École Navale followed by other motorized troops. Up in the air are the aircraft of the Patrouille de France with aerobatics team flying high above. It is also a tradition during Bastille Day to hold lavish food feasts. In fact, in some places in France, it has become a custom to hold picnics on this day.
Families gather together outdoors to enjoy the beauty of nature and share a luscious meal in honor of this historic day. Fireworks have also been added to the celebration of Bastille Day. You can find extravagant display of fireworks especially in the larger cities in France. You dont have to be French or be in France to enjoy this special holiday.
