Celebrating One of India’s Most Popular Events, the Baisakhi Day

Also called the Vaisakhi, Vaishakhi, or Vasakhi, this festival is celebrated on April 14, 2013. It is one of India’s most popular and most anticipated celebrations. In fact, all across the northern Indian continent, people observe this tradition and are always very excited when the month of April is fast approaching. They also consider this day as the beginning of the New Year, as they are following the Hindu Solar Calendar. According to the Sikh Calendar, this day falls on April 13 every year but the date changes to April 14 every once in 36 years. Every year, the Indians that follow the Sikh religion not only in India but also in other parts of the world engage in big and elaborate customs and traditions to observe this day.

Why is this day important?

This celebration is vital to the Sikh religion as it commemorates the day that Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru of the Sikhs formed the Akal Khalsa. This refers to the Community of the Pure. This was officially founded during a ceremony at the Keshgarh Sahib near Anandpur. This group played a crucial role in the revolution against the Mughal rule. Every April 13, Indians remember and celebrate the formation of the Khalsa Panth. It’s also on this day that they thank their God for the year’s abundant harvest and wish for future prosperity.
