Celebrate Baisakhi Day
Baisakhi Day is a very important day for Sikhs. It is during Baisakhi day that the Rabi crop is harvested. Baisakhi Day is also called Khalsa Sirjana Diwas or the birth of Khalsa. This is because Baisakhi Day commemorates the birthday of Khalsa Panth.
Khalsa Panth was inaugurated by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh guru on March 30, 1699. Although this is a happy day, it also marker the day when Guru Arjan Deve was executed by Muslim ruler by means of boiling oil.
Death has an important part to play in the Baisakhi Day Festival. The festival itself started after Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, was beheaded in public by Aurangzeb, the Mughal ruler. Aurangzeb sought to spread Islam in India, but Guru Tegh Bahadur defended the rights of Hindus and the Sikhs. The Mughal empire was threatened by his actions.
Guru Tegh Bahadur was succeeded by his son, Guru Gobind Singh, as the next Sikh Guru. Guru Gobind Singh wanted to inspire his fellow men to have the courage to make sacrifices. During the Baisakhi Day congregation of Sikhs at Keshgarh Sahib near Anandpur Punjab, Guru Gobind Singh showed the people who had gathered and unsheathed sword. He said that great deeds were only made possible through great sacrifice. He asked those who were willing to make great sacrifices to come forward.
