Celebrating Aussie Day

Australia celebrates its national day every January 26 and calls it Australia day. This was formerly called the Anniversary Day, Foundation Day, or ANA Day. It is celebrated to commemorate the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 to proclaim the British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of New Holland. The first celebration of this holiday dates back to 1808 but the first celebration of the day as a public holiday in the whole country started in 1994.

The public holiday starts with the presentation of the Australian of the Year Awards on the Australian Day Eve. The Australia Day Honours list is also announced with addresses from government officials and the Prime Minister. Other subcategory awards include Young Australian of the Year and Senior Australian of the Year. They also give an award for Australia’s Local Hero. Every state under Australia celebrates the holiday by holding community festivals, concerts, and citizenship ceremonies. Community festivals feature barbecue activities, sports competitions, festivals, and fireworks display.

Being the capital, Sydney holds the most colourful and alive celebration of this day. Sydney harbour holds several racing competitions such as ferry race and tall ships race. In Melbourne where multi-culturalism dwell, they feature the People’s March and the Voyages concert. Other music festivals feature the Big Day Out, the Triple J Hottest 100, and the Australia Day Live Concert. Citizenship ceremonies are one of the biggest events during this holiday. People from different countries take Australian citizenship on Australian Day. About 13,000 people from 143 countries were reported to have Australian citizenship in 2011.
