The Origin of Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent in the Catholic Church. It takes place 46 days before the Easter Sunday. The date is not permanent. It can be as early as February 4 or sometimes as late as March 10, depending on where Easter Sunday falls on the Western Christian calendar.

If you read the bible, you’ll find in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke that Jesus had 40-day fasting in the dessert while constantly enduring Satan’s temptations. It is that period that is marked by Ash Wednesday—the 40-day liturgical period consisting of fasting, abstinence, and prayer. The Lent is 46 days in total but the Sundays are excluded as they are not part of the fasting period.

The name Ash Wednesday comes from the practice of putting ashes on the foreheads of people to depict mourning and repentance to God. The ashes placed on the foreheads come from the palms used from the previous Palm Sunday, which are burned down. A priest or minister is in charge of putting the ash on people’s forehead. While doing so, they recite the following verse from the bible:

Remember that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return. (Genesis 3:19) or Repent, and believe the Gospel. (Mark 1:15)

The event is practiced in the Catholic Church. Some Christian churches don’t engage in this practice like the Protestants. However, some like the Methodists, Lutherans and Anglicans practice Ash Wednesday.
