Honor Anzac Day

What exactly happens on Anzac Day? For Australians, this is when they remember the valor and honor of the Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Some say that this is Australia’s most important national event.

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. Soldiers who enlist in this group are called ANZACs. Australia had only been a federal commonwealth for 13 years when war broke out in 1914. The new national government wanted to prove itself to the other countries in the world. So in 1915, troops from Australia and New Zealand set off to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. This would allow the ANZACs to open the Dardanelles to the navies of their allies.

In the long run, the main purpose was to gain control of Constantinople (present-day Istanbul, located in Turkey). This is because Constantinople was the capital of the Ottoman Empire, which supported Germany.

On April 25, 1915, the Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli. But the peninsula was heavily defended by the Ottoman Turkish. The Gallipoli invasion was supposed to quickly get Turkey out of the war. But the situation soon turned into a stalemate. The campaign lasted for eight months. As 1915 drew to a close, the allied forces were evacuated. Both sides suffered heavy losses and experienced great hardship. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers died.
