Death and Drama at the 2012 Aintree Grand National
This year’s Aintree Grand National was filled with drama. The horse Neptune Collonges beat Sunhillyboy by a nose in a marvelous photo finish. Yet Neptune Collonges’s feat was marred by the death of two horses, Synchronised and According to Pete.
Both horses fell at the Becher’s Brook fence, which is now in the center of controversy.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has called for the Aintree Grand National course to be modified. The RSPCA says that there are too many horses competing and that many of the jumps are unsafe. Synchronised was trying to become the first horse to win both the Cheltenham Gold Cup Grand National and the Golden Miller. This has not been done since 1934. Unfortunately, Synchronised had to be put down after he fell at Becher’s Brook. His jockey, AP McCoy, was unseated. Synchronized continued riderless around the course before it was determined that he had a broken leg and had to be put down. Another horse, According to Pete, also had to be put down after falling at the same jump where Synchronised fell. According to Pete suffered from a broken shoulder.
Seabass, the third-placer at the Aintree Grand National, was ridden by a female jockey, Katie Walsh. She made history for being the first female jockey to win third place.
