Created around 1665 by a Dutch master Johannes Vermeer van Delft (born in 1632) and currently on display in Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, Netherlands, this work of a Dutch master had been all but completely ignored during his lifetime and for many years after his death in 1675. Vermeer's works are rare - only about 35 are attributed to him. They are prised for the skill with which he used the effects of light and color and for the "poetic quality of his images". "The Girl with a Pearl Earring" was rediscovered in 1882 and is considered one of the greatest works of the Western art. It had been rightfully called "Dutch Mona Lisa". Many believe that the girl in this painting is Vermeer's youngest daughter, Maria. Find out more about this and other Vermeer's paintings About-Vermeer-Art.com
